Art

Art_1.jpg

The Art Department at Māngere College teaches incremental Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking skills and ideas, which are progressively individualised.

At all levels and in both disciplines, students are asked to use Art-making to develop, clarify and communicate ideas.

The visual and conceptual ideas that are explored are derived from students making analytical and inferential responses to relevant culturally inclusive Artworks.

This establishes the foundation for students to develop an individual and personal approach to creative thinking, problem-solving and a variety of innovation skills that are inherently transferrable across the wider curriculum as well as into any future endeavour.

Our programs are culturally responsive, based on explorations of personal and collective identity concerning both the immediate physical environment and the remembered and imagined environment of origin.

In Visual Art, students are encouraged to make positive learning decisions and become independent learners, co-constructing some of the individualized learning resources with the teacher

For many years, the Art Department has consistently performed highly in the NCEA assessment, with success rates above the national average in both the internal and external assessment. We are aspirational in our approach to student success, with almost all Art students passing NCEA Art at Level 1, 2, and 3, with significant numbers of Merit and Excellence subject endorsements each year.

Topics Covered in Art at Mangere College:

Year 9 and 10

Below are foundation topics introduced for the NCEA scaffold:

Business Studies

“Finance is not merely about making money. It is about achieving our deep goals and protecting the fruits of our labour. It’s about stewardship and, therefore, about achieving the good society.”

– Robert J. Shiller

business.jpg

The Business Studies Department at Mangere College offers financial education for one term to all Year 9 students. This is to ensure that every junior student has exposure to and develops knowledge and understanding of basic financial matters. This will help them to become financially capable.

In Year 10, students can select to study a full year course in Business Studies where they incorporate their Year 9 knowledge and broaden their skills in Accounting, Business Studies and Economics. Therefore, this course introduces students to Accounting, Economic concepts and Business studies knowledge in making the right choice for their NCEA course pathways.

Year 11, 12 and 13 students can choose to do any three subjects, or all Commerce subjects. Accounting is useful for any person wishing to enter the world of commerce in such areas as being an Accountant, Business Management, Risk Management, Banking, Tourism, Marketing, Insurance, Information Technology, Resource Management, Finance, Consultancy, Advisory and Self-Employment and Venture Capitalists.

Economics is a social science involving the study of people and their activities relating to production, consumption and trade, or exchange. It is a study of the behaviour of individuals, their work, decisions of what to produce, where to locate and how to market, and the activities of Government. A thorough study is also made of major economic issues, i.e. unemployment, inflation, budget deficits, trade imbalances and economic growth as well as monetary policy and fiscal policies and OCR.

Business Studies introduces you to the world of business. It covers Human Resources, Marketing, Research and running of the business by learning how to make a business plan, promoting and marketing your business and selling your product in different markets. Students learn about costing and pricing of the products. Business can help you in any profession.

The Department of English at Māngere College teaches incremental, transferrable reading and writing skills that lay the foundation for deep level and transformational thinking as our learners (ākonga) make their journey through English. Our reciprocal reading programme is designed to help our ākonga become confident, independent readers and critical thinkers. Our writing programme is designed to help our ākonga write confidently across a range of writing styles. We encourage our ākonga to express their ideas in an oral language context and we offer extracurricular opportunities to join our debating and spoken word teams. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

For those students who have recently arrived in New Zealand, ESOL classes gives them the opportunity to develop their English in a safe environment, often in smaller classes. Those students who are in the mainstream but still needing some help with their English will also often have the opportunity to get teacher aide assistance in their mainstream class. Our ESOL classes are planned around current themes that seek to develop language used across the curriculum, and often incorporate practical elements in the classroom. School trips into the school garden and the community strive to teach elements of our community and New Zealand life.

The Language Department

The Language Department at Māngere College encourages exploration of one’s own language and culture. Our learning area puts students' ability to communicate at the centre by making Communication the core strand. This strand is supported by developing the linguistic and cultural awareness needed for communicative competence.

Mathematics

Event-1-22.jpg

At Māngere College we support our students in their learning, from basic math skills for everyday life through to preparing students for further study.

Teachers encourage students to demonstrate mathematical concepts from a variety of perspectives. Cross curricular activities and appreciation of diverse cultures including our local iwi is encouraged in the classroom. Students are encouraged to use technological tools appropriately and effectively in their math lessons. Our  senior maths students are encouraged to choose courses that match their career pathways. This is done through discussions with their teachers and exposure through career expos and opportunities offered by outside providers.

Our dedicated staff also provide free extra tutorial help outside of school hours where students can go for one-to-one help. The current Acting Deputy Principal Miss Ma (former HoD) developed and encouraged team Mathematics competitions for some of our South Auckland schools. In addition to the competition there are opportunities for senior students to attend Pacific Academy. This is an initiative run by the University of Auckland for students who are preparing for math and statistics externals. We continue to encourage students to sign up and take part as it compliments the learning in the classroom.

A summary of the success our students are experiencing here at Māngere College in Mathematics and Statistics:

  •  Over 99% numeracy

  • 70% of our students take maths all the way up to Year 13.

  • Teams placed in the top 3 at South Auckland Mathematics Competition (SAMC) events.

Science

Science involves people investigating the living, physical, material, and technological components of their environment and making sense of them in logical and creative ways.

Learning in Science is fundamental to understanding the world in which we live and work. It helps people to clarify ideas, to ask questions, to test explanations through measurement and observation, and to use their findings to establish the worth of an idea.

Mangere College Science department is well resourced with experienced and knowledgeable staff. Students are provided with many learning opportunities and interactive experiments that introduce them into the world of Science. We cover the 4 strands of Science at the junior levels. Students are doing Biology, Chemistry and Physics at senior levels.

Our teaching and student stewardship is informed by pedagogical research and catered to the different learning styles of our learners. We offer a safe space for learning, collaborative and inclusive with content comprising fundamental theory and experiments.
